Q&A: Conference aims to tap Latino consumers

The spending power of the Latino population is expected to reach $1.3 trillion by 2015 – purchasing power larger than all but 14 countries worldwide, according to U.S. census data.

These escalating numbers are forcing traditional retailers – from apparel to food service – to develop plans to attract Latino consumers in various markets such as Southern California. To help retailers such as Gap capitalize on this growing population, the International Council of Shopping Centers is hosting its second annual Hispanic Markets National Conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday and Thursday.

From concert coverage to seats on the corporate board, Latinos are not getting the kind of representation they deserve, according to several chief executives of Fortune 500 companies.

When Mexican rock band Mana surpassed Britney Spears' record for the most sold-out shows at Staples Center, few media outlets in Los Angeles covered it. 

Timothy J. Leiweke, president and chief executive of sports and entertainment firm AEG, believes that was a mistake considering that Latinos are making up a greater portion of ticket buyers.
